Motivation
Get started! I’m sure many of you, like me, have trouble doing what we don’t need to do immediately. As a professional procrastinator, I have made it a science to only do the things that have to be done that day and even put some of them off until later. We all have more things to do than we have time for, but recently, I’ve taken to a schedule and a list of tasks to help me out. In addition, there are some health tricks to increase your motivation:
Three factors play a large role in helping you generate, sustain, and regulate motivation. These are your dopamine levels, circadian rhythm, and exercise.
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a central role in the reward system of your brain. When you receive a reward for doing something, your brain releases dopamine and sets up a feedback loop which expects similar rewards in the future. By supplying yourself with small and constant rewards for completing goals and tasks, you can hack your internal reward system to motivate yourself. Yes, maybe it’s self-bribery. But it does work. Give yourself a sense of anticipation and let that drive you to productivity and finishing what you start.
Your circadian rhythm is your internal body clock which determines the hours of the day where you’re most active and attentive, when you feel sluggish, and when is the right time for you to rest. Some of us like to rise early, while others prefer sleeping in. Shape your routine according to your preferences for maximum productivity. Maximize for your energy levels – typical energetic times are mid-morning, early evening, and later in the evening. Put your tough tasks here for when your brain is functioning at its daily best.
Lastly, exercise is also an invaluable way to improve your concentration and increase serotonin. It also keeps the engine of your thinking, the brain, healthy and ready for action. The increased blood and oxygen flow literally rebuilds and maintains your brain. This has a tremendous impact on motivation levels, so make sure you exercise at least moderately several times each week. You probably knew this one already, but hey, let’s cover all bases.
So get it done! Get up, get motivated, and be successful!
